Rock, Paper, Scissors: A Simple and Fun Game
Rock, Paper, Scissors is a classic hand game which is easy to play and is very popular among all age groups. It is “often employed in resolving disputes, decision-making, and negotiations” (Leigh) or sometimes just to have fun. Here is a brief description of the game:
How to Play Rock, Paper, Scissors
- Players: The game usually consists of two players.
- Gestures: Each player must display one of the three shapes with the gesture of their hand at the same time: –
Rock: A fist.
Paper: An open hand.
Scissors: A fist with the index and middle fingers extended, making a “V.”
- Objective: The aim is to choose a movement that will win based on the type of move your rival will make using the following rules: –
Rock beats Scissors (rock crushes scissors). –
Scissors beats Paper (scissors cut paper).
Paper beats Rock (paper covers rock).
Game Rules- Round Outcome:
The game consists of several rounds. After each round, players present their sought-after sign at the same time.
If both players choose the same sign, this round will be a tie and you have to play it again. – If one of the players’ sign defeats the others, the winner player gets a point.
Winner:
The first one to win a set number of rounds (such as 3 or 5) is considered the winner.
Why It’s Popular
- Simple to Learn: The guidelines are not intricate and thus can be easily understood thus may be a favorite among children and adults as well.
- Quick Play: You only spend a few seconds on each round, therefore, you can quickly make decisions like who wins, and move on to the next play.
- Used for Decision-Making: It is often used for sorting out things like who will go first in a game or solving a minor argument, etc.
- No Equipment Needed: Everything you require is a pair of your hands hence affecting the game to be portable to play just anywhere.
Fun Variations- Best of Three-
Players may opt to have more than one round, and the main winner is the first person to get two out of three. –
Tournament Style: You may arrange tournaments to give different groups who have won, the chance to move to the other round until one is left and is the general winner.
Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock: A fun and popular version of the classic game with exciting new ways to win or lose.
What are the words to rock-paper-scissors?
We used to play “ Ching. Chong, Chow” that is “Rock, Paper ,Scissors”
A, B and C put their hands behind their backs. And when you all say “Ching, Chong, Chow” you take your turn to bring out your to show your symbol. A brings out a flat hand = Paper, B brings out a fist = Rock, and C brings out two fingers= Scissors.
Its scored like this :- – – PAPER covers a ROCK, A ROCK crush es a SCISSORS, and a SCISSORS cuts the PAPER. If you all bring out the same symbol or 2 show 1 symbol and the 3rd person shows a different symbol. You keep playing until you one of you wins. Sounds silly but it was fun!
Conclusion
Rock, Paper, Scissors is an evergreen game that connects people in a fun way. You can decide who gets the last slice of pizza, or you can just have fun with your friends, because the game is short and fun. You can just play it anyway you want.
Any game that isn’t entirely random has at least some element of strategy. This becomes most apparent when playing longer stretches of Rock Paper Scissors (e.g. Best of three, best of five, first to ten points, etc.)
So let’s give some reasons why RPS is not a random game.
Rock-paper-scissors is a great example of forced choice.
There are many factors that influence players’ decisions, so the chances that a move is casually picked really low.
Factors such as: –
The choice they made in the previous round.
The choice their opponent made in the previous round.
Any visible cues from their opponent, like words, facial expressions, or body language.
Their current mood, surroundings, and countless other factors are the ones that can influence a player’s decision.
Even if a player thinks they are behaving randomly, they almost certainly aren’t. Many experiments have proven that when people attempt random patterns they are actually terrible at it and will very quickly fall into predictable patterns.
True random patterns of RPS, would have repeating strings of Rock 6, 7 or even up to 10 instances of repeating the same choice over and over again. People almost never repeat the same choice more than 3 times.
Many people are extremely susceptible to priming or the power of suggestion, especially when they believe they are acting on a whim.
If there is even a slightly increased probability that one player will make a predictable move (e.g. they have thrown Rock 3 times in a row and are now less likely to throw it again) and their opponent notices this and it affects their next choice, then they are making a strategic choice.
So if all of the above sounds reasonable, RPS is a strategic game.
Like all strategic games, making sound strategic choices is no guarantee of success in every single round (any RPS strategy has a counter strategy). However, over the long run, a player making strategic choices against another human player will win more often than they lose.
Who got to live.
Now hear me out on this one.
I was playing a match of Fortnite, when I look up and see I’m one of two remaining. I of course look around to see where the other person is, and he’s… emoting.
This is usually a friendly gesture, so I head over there to possibly negotiate peace.
He used the rock paper scissors emote at the same time I did…
And I won.
By some unwritten contract, he dropped all his weapons and ammunition. And I knew
That I had won.
Who was going to unload the dishwasher. 🙂
Why do most people choose rock when playing rock/paper/scissors?
Rock is indeed the most common first throw, however this is only among males who are generally not seasoned players. Female newer players tend to prefer a Scissors opener, but this tendency is not nearly as pronounced as Rock is among males. The most likely reasons for this are:
Rock is a fist and therefore seen as the most aggressive of the three throws and therefore believed to be a strong opening move (it generally isn’t)
As noted, by Benjamin Peterson below, it requires the least effort
It is also the most satisfying throw to win with. There is an ineffable masculine desire (mostly among the immature, but not exclusively) to crush things and many people cannot resist the temptation to dominate their opponent by “ritualizing the win” (physically rapping the opponent’s Scissors with their Rock)
